…Claire de Lune, Friend of OffBall™, announced “Basketball, Etc.” via iHeartPodcasts and promised to deliver “cool, weird, untold, and undertold basketball stories” from in and around hoop culture. Sports Media’s Most Okay Woman, a.k.a. me, just so happens to be in an episode. Watch the full trailer here before the pod officially drops next Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Speaking of cool and weird — well, just cool — the NBA’s young boys (not the rapper) delivered the goods at Monday’s league-wide media days. AJ Dybantsa dropped a bar about “balancing books and ball” while sharing his plans to finish his degree during his rookie year with the Wizards. Plus, Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle graced the cover of GQ Hype. Check out our roundup of NBA Media Days gems here.
Blake Griffin’s NBA Media Days are behind him, but he’s entering his yapping prime. “The Stepback with Blake Griffin,” announced last month, will hit Amazon Prime Video and YouTube on Oct. 20. Griffin just shared a behind-the-scenes look at the writers’ room. Consider this your warning, the Jimmy(s) and Seth.
Season 2 of “Heated Rivalry” and “Off Campus” won’t hit for months, but NHL CMO Sean Eggert said, "Why wait?" To mark the start of the new season, according to Alex Silverman of Sports Business Journal, Eggert led the charge to launch the NHL's "Hot for Hockey" campaign. League-sponsored fan fiction, anyone?
If you thought WAG life was exclusive to the pros, allow glam extraordinaire Allison Kaye to prove you wrong. Ellyn Briggs of Front Office Sports followed Kaye on her college campus tour to start the college football season, including Ohio State and Penn State. Ryan Day could never.
Forward this to the football watchers among you who wish to be enlightened.

“Go Off” is a special edition of our daily newsletter, featuring my thoughts, takes, and general vibes, presented to OffBall readers every Wednesday.
I do believe it takes a certain type of meatheaded heart to enjoy people smashing into one another. Sometimes I’m smart, like when I’m listening to Bright Eyes or reading James Baldwin, but oftentimes I’m dumb. Like when I’m watching football.
But I had a thought, what if we (football fans) could look at the game through a more intellectual framing? This started because I thought I might wax poetic about how much I love cornerbacks (arguably the hardest position in the game) and how silly they can be. Then I (David Foster Wallace voice) Consider(ed) the wide receiver, and how silly they can be (see Diggs, Stefon, above), and I realized Carl Jung never specifically assigned archetypes to each NFL position group. Because he was full-time smart, probably. Anyways, would you be so kind as to put on a pair of bifocals, grab a Scotch, and head into the salon with me while I archetype assign?
Jung’s 12 archetypes basically defined the traits and behavioral patterns that shape out personalities. If you don’t know Jung, talk to Aaron Gordon. Anyway, each archetype fits into a cardinal orientation. Those being:
Ego - leave a mark on the world
Order - provide structure to the world
Social - connect to others
Freedom - yearn for paradise
We are all galvanized and moved by different motivators. Some of us let our haters be our motivators, some are out here restoring order to the world, some do it for the people we love, some are on lifelong explorations. Here are the archetypes I’d assign to each NFL position group, based on their posts, vibes, fashion, online presence, and interests.
Quarterback - The Hero
It’s no surprise that our heroes fall into the ego orientation — he wants to leave a mark on the world. His core desire is to prove his worth through courageous and good acts. He’s competent, he’s courageous. He doesn’t get too low or too high. He says stuff like this:
@nfl #jalenhurts quotes never miss 😤 #philadelphia #eagles #nfl #superbowl #SBLIX
Offensive Lineman - The Everyman
The offensive lineman exists to play a specific role. The Everyman falls into the social orientation. His sense of belonging is strong, and his desire to connect with others is paramount. He wants to fit in with the rest of his friends (fellow linemen), and he wants to feel close to his quarterback. He clocks in, works hard, listens to a little country music, makes everyone proud, and clocks out.
Cornerback - The Explorer
Cornerbacks are my little guys. That’s why I’m happy to give them the archetype of The Explorer. They fall into the freedom orientation. They can’t be tamed; they desire freedom and exploration, fueled by a disinterest in boredom and a fiery ambition. They are true to who they are. They believe in themselves, and understand celebrating that is important — even if they don’t deserve it.
Running Back - The Creator/Artist
This is one of the most compelling archetypes to me. The running back, who fits into the order orientation (provides structure to the world), brings goals to life via innovation. He makes something out of nothing, finds a hole where there wasn’t one, makes a lane for himself. Sometimes that lane is in Hollywood.
Safety - The Caregiver
Safeties love their neighbor as themselves. They, too, sit in the order orientation. Despite being the lesser known sect in the defensive back category, they are happy to protect their teammates. They preach selflessness and gratitude. All of Tyrann Mathieu’s tweets are pretty much quote tweets hyping other players or tweets about donating to some charitable cause.
Linebacker - The Sage
The Sage has an obsession with the truth. They use their cunning and analysis to understand the world around them. Situated in the freedom orientation, they are contemplative. They seek understanding. Ernest Jones IV, Azeez Al-Shaair, Nick Bolton — these are the wisest on the team, and they have a lot to offer the world off the field.
Wide Receiver - The Outlaw
The wide receiver was the inspiration behind this character analysis, so it’s no surprise they’ve got one of the strongest archetypes. They are the Outlaw, situated in the ego orientation (obviously). They assume everyone’s out to get them, and that they’re built different (which, to be clear, is true). They break rules, seek revenge, and shock the world. They are loud in both voice and dress, frequently ending up on runways, or making the tunnel their very own runway.
Defensive Lineman - The Ruler
The Ruler is in the order orientation. They have a thirst for power, and they aren’t afraid to wield it when they get it. They are the responsible leaders of the defense inspiring change and action. Sort of like how Leonard Williams lords over his kingdom of plants.
Tight End - The Innocent.
To be honest, they are kind of giant freaks (positive). George Kittle, Gronk, Travis Kelce. They have faith, they dare to dream, and they certainly believe in the freedom to be you and me. They belong in the freedom orientation. A tight end knows he isn’t a receiver, but he continues on his steadfast journey of doing what’s right and good. And being a little silly.
Placekicker/Punter - The Jesters
The Jester, sitting in the social orientation, is a performer at heart. Kickers like to make people laugh, they enjoy a little spotlight. They make jokes, have funny nicknames, and are used to entertaining themselves and others on the sidelines often.
There are a few archetypes (and positions) not represented, but I’ll let you decide how punt returner fits the Magician bill.

Lately I’ve been uninspired by my wardrobe. Maybe it’s that the weather is transitioning or maybe it’s that I’m just a speck of dust on a rock flying through space. Regardless, I’m in the mood to spend. If you are, too, here are some of my recs.
If you’ve got $770 lying around, and enough money to fly to Brazil, you can get the Welcome Sunny Garments x NFL leather jacket, also known as the most expensive item in Brazil’s NFL Shop. I actually prefer this one, which is much cheaper, but I can’t tell if they ship here on account of the fact that I do not speak Portuguese.
If you don’t know about Damecore, they call themselves the Vogue of Women’s Basketball, and they sell some really cool stuff. Hayley Williams agrees. Check out their lace shorts here. And here.
Jaelyn Smith aka “Rebranded,” is an upcycler/designer extraordinaire, and she’s making some of the coolest sportswear in the game.
