DK Metcalf, Luka, And Miley Cyrus Walk Into A Bar...

Plus, Hollywood Can’t Quit The Oakland A’s

…Despite Lewis Hamilton previously saying he “couldn’t wear leggings,” lifestyle-performance hybrid brands like Lululemon and Alo have been working around the clock to appeal to more than just yoga moms. And it’s working. Maybe men and women aren’t so different after all.

From Germany to the UK—no, this is not a post-college backpacking trip—it’s the Baller League. A league with a fresh take on soccer, and it’s sweeping European nations. And although the draft isn’t until Monday, the league’s iconic coaches, Dave and Clint 419, are already talking sh*t.

Arch Digest but make it ASMR. Skylar Diggins-Smith partnered with Wayfair to make her Unrivaled home away from home in Miami feel like hers. I think we found the secret to the Lunar Owl’s success (it’s comfy chairs). Hootie Hoooooome!!

Your anti-cardio homies can hang up their sneakers because you just got a new running buddy. And he’s a famous DJ. Diplo is running around these cities and he wants you to join. If we had a nickel for every time a famous DJ wanted to hang out we’d have…one, because of Diplo.

Traveling can be really stressful; we’ve all had trips that didn’t go smoothly. But Morgan Riddle, influencer and girlfriend of glam tennis star Taylor Fritz, may take the cake. From having multiple items of clothing “eaten” by TSA machines, to being electrocuted and kidnapped, she’s been near her break point several times.

Sports fandom is mostly hard. That sounds doomerist, but it really isn’t, it’s just a fact, Jack. Even if you do experience the highs of a huge win, there will still be lows, right, CW teen drama inspired by the Archie comics, Riverdale?

So true, Riverdale, thanks.

You never win every game or every championship, and even if you have a top 5 player on your team, sometimes you can’t trust your front office to keep things intact. Mavs fans used to watch Jalen Brunson and Luka Doncic play together. Now, those two will be facing off against each other tonight—neither wearing a Mavs uni. On top of that, their All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving tore his ACL. We don’t want to be dramatic, but they just endured a month of hell and they may or may not be cursed.

Or maybe those tribulations are just the tariff of fandom. As we all know but sometimes need reminding, our companies are not our friends. No one understands this better than the players, who often learn this the hard way (remember the Saquon phone call we shared yesterday?).

At least the Mavs aren’t suffering alone. Yesterday, Seahawks fans woke to the news that DK Metcalf, as iconic an athlete as there is in Seattle, announced he wanted a trade to a contender (double ouch!). It was enough to bring a professional broadcaster to her knees. When your team isn’t winning championships, players can become unhappy, which means they want to leave, and then you’re left even more unhappier-er. A vicious cycle. Or, as in the case of Tyler Lockett, a long-time fan favorite on the verge of retirement anyway, you may be released for salary cap purposes, which still stings for all involved.

Despite our therapists' advice, we keep coming back. The psychological ties we feel to sports and our fandom are deeply rooted in identity and tribalism. So even with all of this pain, and the epic highs and lows, we can’t get enough.

And maybe that’s because sports are about the very ride we wish we could get off. Or we think we want to get off. As famed philosopher Miley Cyrus once said: it’s all about the climb…there’s always gonna be another mountain, I’m always gonna wanna make it move.

How did we get to a place where two of the biggest brands in entertainment, Pixar and Brad Pitt, are telling stories about the Oakland A’s, a team that doesn’t exist anymore. At least in the way it used to.  Everyone loves the A’s—as a concept.

”Win Or Lose,” Pixar’s latest animated series about a youth co-ed baseball team called the Pickles, pays homage to the A’s in uniform colors and geography (the town is loosely based on Oakland). (Unrelated, there is a real-life Pickles team, by the way, and they were heartbroken to be ripped off by Pixar.

While “Win Or Lose” is fiction, Brad Pitt’s “Moneyball” gives direct acclamation to the team in that it’s a true story. The Pixar joint encompasses Oakland’s scrappy ethos, resilience, and community. The Pitt one focuses on the innovation innately required in underdog-ism.

With the A’s departure to Vegas (they’ll play their first season in 2028), one has to wonder why a team special enough to memorialize on streaming services wasn’t worth keeping in their hometown.

The A’s departure to Vegas is a reminder that even though a team could be so beloved and so full of spirit and history that it catches the attention of Hollywood—it doesn’t mean they're safe at home.
